All products labelled as #ORGANIC meet the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) – the international gold standard for organic textiles. ‘Organic’ must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibres whereas a product with the label grade ‘made with organic’ must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibres. All chemical inputs such as dyestuffs and auxiliaries used must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria. The choice of accessories is limited in accordance with ecological aspects as well. A functional waste water treatment plant is mandatory for any wet-processing unit involved and all processors must comply with minimum social criteria. This term is only used if the product has been certified as Fairtrade. This is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. The Fairtrade Mark means that the ingredients in the product have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards. The standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in business or community projects
This indicates that the product uses significantly lower energy than conventional alternatives - where available the EU energy rating is provided. The EU energy label rates a number of products from dark green (A +++ most efficient) to red (D least efficient). The label also shows total energy consumption and provides other information relevant to that product, such as water consumption and noise levels for washing machines, and screen size for televisions. The term is also used in Peridot Place for any product that helps to reduce the amount of energy used in the home e.g. insulation, gadgets
This indicates that products are from a sustainable source e.g. recycled, reclaimed, natural materials such as wool, or FSC certified wood (Forest Stewardship Council) - an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests
There are no legal definitions or well established standards for the terms "natural" or "chemical free" and they are typically used very loosely. Within Peridot Place the term "chemical free" is used to indicate that the product does not contain any chemicals that are known to be harmful to our health or the environment
